Overview
A dual-layer modular stage signage system designed for a university TEDx event, combining face-lit lettering with a hollow lightbox to deliver clear, professional visual impact under stage lighting—while remaining easy to transport and assemble.
Context
The project was commissioned for a TEDx event organized at Okayama University in Japan. The organizers required a stage signage solution that aligned with TEDx visual standards, performed well for live audiences and camera recording, and could be installed efficiently by a small on-site team within limited setup time.
Challenges
The signage system needed to balance three core requirements:
- Visual Fidelity: Clear legibility and controlled brightness for stage lighting and video capture
- Installation Simplicity: Assembly and wiring suitable for non-technical users
- Cost Awareness: Achieving layered, high-end visual depth without high-cost materials
Process
Material & Structure Optimization
A two-part structure was applied to create visual hierarchy:
- The upper "TEDx" lettering used 8mm acrylic for crisp face-lit clarity
- The lower "Okayama University" element was integrated into a brushed stainless steel hollow lightbox, adding depth while maintaining cost control
Installation-Oriented Engineering
To support manual handling and transport, the lightbox was designed as a split structure.
All illuminated components were pre-wired into a single Japanese-standard 2m power cord, minimizing on-site electrical work and reducing installation complexity.
Stage Lighting Calibration
6500K LED modules were selected and calibrated to ensure the red and black branding remained sharp and readable under strong stage lights and camera exposure.
Outcome
- Complete on-site assembly and setup completed within approximately 30 minutes
- Stable, camera-ready visual performance throughout the event
- Simplified installation achieved without technical assistance
